This is a craftsman-style deck I added onto the back of our house in 2005 to replace the tiny old deck. This project grew into a flagstone patio with a pergola, bridge and a custom bench.
When we bought the house in 2004 there was a tiny rotten wooden deck. I wanted more room and place for the hot tub so I came up with this craftsman-style design.
The lights are low-voltage LED garden lights that I wired into custom 4x4 posts made surrounded by 2x2 trim. They turn on automatically at night.
The bridge was already there but I redid the handrail to match the light post trim using 2x2's, and added lights.
The patio is flagstone I got locally. It was very heavy. In the center I cut out a Texas shape. Over time roots from the trees have made some parts uneven.
The pergola continues the craftsman style and includes matching light posts on each end.
I couldn't find a store-bought bench that went well with all this so I made one. I was surprised how difficult it was to come up with a shape that is comfortable to sit in.
